Flying Sites -- Smith Hill
..................................................
This location is a popular hill site in Thousand Oaks used by both beginners and experienced fliers. This hill is open land with public access, that is its not an official club site. The hill is west facing and is suitable for both thermal and lighter slope ships but not for activities like combat because most lift is available some distance from the slope face. The best hours of flying are between about 11am and 3pm. Access to the hill is from Lone Oaks Drive off Hillcrest Rd. (TG 526:J7, 34.1856N:118.8445W). The track to the hilltop now has a gate half way up it and should not be driven (even though several vehicles have just driven around it already). The hill face is covered in mustard and extensive patches of "stickers" for much of the year so its advisable to fly planes that stand out against vegetation and have robust leading edges and for fliers to dress in clothing that is relatively impervious to grass seeds (unless you want to spend hours picking the things out of your shoes and clothing!).
IMPORTANT Frequency Information. We now have an electric club based at Conejo Creek South which is close enough to Smith for mutual interference. The club typically flies only early mornings but it is advised to review the Redwood frequency sharing agreement ( here ) to see which channels they claim exclusive use of.
